'KILLED IN THE DARDANELLES'

Company Sergt Major Charlie Jones, 59, 1/5th Welsh Regiment

Killed in Action on 21st August 1915

Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey


Charlie would have seen heavy action following the landing of the Welsh at Sulva Bay, on 9th August.

He was a Boer War veteran and was presented with a silver watch by the Dowlais Chamber of Trade on his safe return from South Africa, along with the Long Service and Good Conduct medal for his Terrortorial service.

Prior to WW1, he was employed at the Bedlinog Collieries.

Lived in Greenfield Terrace, Gellifaelog with his wife Annie Jones and their three sons. His oldest son, David J Jones, was also serving with the 1/5th Welsh in Galipolli.
