World War 1

Work began in February 2020 to establish a full list of names of men and women who were killed during the First World War.

At the unveiling of the Pontmorlais War Memorial in 1931, it was estimated that there were over 1140 Merthyr men & women who were killed during the First World War. It was deemed impractible to place so many names on the Memorial, so it was agreed that a "beautifully bound and illuminated book would be deposited at Cyfarthfa Castle and then the Free Library"

A request was put out to the public to fund this work, but unfortunately it was never completed, however, a Roll of Honour was produced for the unveiling of the memorial. Fast forward 89 years and this roll became the starting point for this website and what will hopefully be a final memorial detailing the names of the fallen. The most important aspect is the men I have now found (circa 69 and rising), who were 'missing' from the original roll.

I estimate that I have spent in excess of 100 hours researching and typing up individual stories, with many still not completed.

As of October 14th 2022;

Confirmed names for Memorial - 527

Names to be added - 69
